What is Matterport Technology?

Matterport is a technology company that provides a platform for creating, storing, and sharing 3D models of physical spaces. The company's technology allows users to create immersive, interactive 3D models of real-world spaces using a combination of specialized cameras and software.

In terms of the AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) industry, Matterport's technology has a variety of applications. For example, it can be used to create virtual tours of buildings that are under construction or renovation, allowing stakeholders to visualize the project before it is complete. It can also be used to create detailed 3D models of existing buildings, which can be useful for facility management and maintenance, as well as for creating architectural plans.

How Does Matterport and Photogrammetry Work?

Matterport and photogrammetry are two technologies used to create digitized models of physical spaces. Matterport uses a specialized camera system to capture a series of panoramic images of a space, and then uses advanced software algorithms to stitch those images together into a seamless, interactive 3D model. The Matterport camera is specifically designed for this purpose, with a combination of wide-angle lenses and depth sensors that allow it to capture both visual and spatial information about the space.

Photogrammetry is a process that involves taking a large number of photos of an object or space from multiple angles. Software analyzes the images to identify common points between them and triangulate the position of those points in 3D space. Please note that Robotic Imaging only uses LiDAR data to construct an accurate 3D model. Matterport is moreso a tool to visualize spaces. Resulting models created by Matterport and photogrammetry technology may be less interactive and immersive than LiDAR derived models. Robotic Imaging prioritizes accurate 3D final models for our clients. This is why we only use LiDAR and only reference photogrammetry in our conversion pipeline!

What Are the Benefits of Matterport Technology?

One of the key benefits of Matterport's technology is that it allows users to create highly detailed and accurate models of physical spaces without the need for expensive, specialized equipment or extensive technical expertise. This makes it accessible to a wide range of users in the AEC industry, including architects, engineers, construction managers, and facility managers.
